California Valley Miwok Tribe’s Chairperson Silvia Burley attended the 2014 White House Tribal Nations Conference in Washington DC. This is the 6th White House Tribal Leaders Conference held in Washington D.C. and hosted by President Barack Obama.
On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm held at the Capital Hilton, Chairperson Silvia Burley participated in the 2014 White House Tribal Nations Conference (WHTNC) Supplementary Breakout Session “Strengthening Tribal Economies: Jobs, Energy, Housing, and Infrastructure”. This session discussed topics such as: Jobs and workforce development – Energy – Housing – Transportation – Broadband – Access to Capital – Trade – and Government contracting.
On Wednesday, December 3, 2014, Chairperson Burley attended the 2014 White House Tribal Nations Conference which was held at the Capital Hilton in Washington DC.
8:30 am – 10:30 am was the Opening Session Speakers and Presenters included, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary Sally Jewell (Dept. of the Interior), and Secretary Sylvia Burwell (Dept. of Health and Human Services). Economic Development Panel: Secretary Tom Vilsack (Dept. of Agriculture); Secretary Anthony Foxx (Dept. of Transportation); Secretary Julian Castro (Dept. of Housing and Urban Development); and Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet (Small Business Administration). Attorney General Eric Holder (Dept. of Justice).
11:00 am – 1:15 pm Breakout Session, Chairperson Burley participated in the session titled “Advancing the Government-to-Government Relationship: Self-Determination, Treaty, and Trust Responsibilities”. Topics discussed were: Trust modernization – Budget – Tax – Self-Governance – Contract Support Costs – Consultation – White House Council on Native American Affairs – Federal Acknowledgment – Election and Voting Rights – Data- and Carcieri.
2:00 pm – 4:30 pm, Closing Session – Climate Change Panel participants: Secretary Sally Jewell (Dept. of the Interior) – Administrator Gina McCarthy (Environmental Protection Agency); Administrator Craig Fugate (Federal Emergency Management Agency); Acting Chair Mike Boots (Council on Environmental Quality). Youth & Education Panel: Director Cicilia Munoz (White House Domestic Policy Council); Secretary Sally Jewell (Secretary of the Interior); Secretary Arne Duncan (Dept. of Education); Secretary Thomas Perez (Dept. of Labor); Director Katherine Archuleta (Office of Personnel Management). President Barack Obama.
4:30 pm – 6:30 pm Chairperson Burley attended the Tribal Leaders Reception held at the Capital Hilton.
