The California Valley Miwok Tribe – located at 10601 Escondido Pl., Stockton, CA (As listed in the Federal Register of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, BIA/DOI), a federally recognized tribe eligible to receive and distribute services from the federal government – on Friday, December 3rd, presented officials of The California Museum with an authentic American Indian cultural handmade item. The item (a traditional Miwok basket made by Tribal Elder and Cultural Artisan Mildred Burley) was presented to the Museum’s Executive Director Claudia French, Deputy Director Amanda Meeker and Project Manager P. Christiaan Klieger, PhD.
This was a culmination of a previous request by the museum for any item representative of the Tribe, if the Tribe would wish to take part in the new California Native American exhibit scheduled to open sometime in March of 2011. While at the museum, the Tribe was taken on a tour of current and interesting exhibits and shown the vast area being dedicated to California Native Americans in the upcoming exhibit which will showcase California Valley Miwok’s donation, along with other donations by participating California tribes and Native Americans. The staff at The California Museum were very informative and went into great detail as to the history of the museum, its exhibits and of future exhibits being planned.
